Deconstructing the Binary

Chromosomes, hormones, gonads, and anatomy do not line up into two tidy boxes. Intersex variation is roughly as common as having red hair.

Roles, dress, work, kinship, pronouns, and ritual standing are assigned by culture — and different cultures assign them very differently.

The rigid two-sex model is a relatively recent European invention — built in roughly the 18th–19th centuries and then exported by empire.

Dozens of societies — past and present — recognize gender categories beyond two, often with their own ceremonial, legal, and family roles.

European empires systematically attacked indigenous gender systems through law, religion, schooling, and outright violence — and the damage shaped the world we live in.

Recognizing the binary as one cultural option among many doesn't erase men and women — it makes room for the people the binary was built to exclude.
